Reprogramming Your Mind for Success

by Rev. James Wong

A sick mind produces a sick life. We have no other choice. Unless we have a healthy mind we cannot have healthy living. More seriously, our mind is programmed by our experiences and the things we have learned and accepted to be right for us. Faulty thinking leads to faulty living and wrong thinking leads to wrong living.

If you are 25 years old you have gone through 25 years of programming of your mind. So, some of us have 50 or 60 years of programming, depending on our age. It is no small task to change the pattern or habit of our thinking. “Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts” (Proverbs 4:23 TEV).

A person who loses his temper easily is a person who is programmed with angry thoughts. He is not aware that he can make a choice not to let anyone make him angry. He simply reacts naturally with anger based on the programming in his mind. If you are always unhappy it is because your mind is programmed with a lot of unhappy thoughts, although you may know that you ought to be happy trusting Christ.

Our mind is the hardware and our thinking is the software. Unless we update the software we will be operating with an old programming. The only way to achieve new result is to update or change the programming. Here is what the bible teaches about reprogramming our mind for success in Christ.

1. Reprogramming your mind with God’s word. “Do not conform yourselves to the standards of this world, but let God transform you inwardly by a complete change of your mind. Then you will be able to know the will of God — what is good and is pleasing to him and is perfect” (Romans 12:2 TEV). Read the Bible, underline those words that speak directly to you and memorize them and let them carve into your mind and become yours. Anything that is not memorized is not yours and could not be recalled with ease. The new thoughts must override the old thoughts like erasing the old data from the hard disk and rewriting new data over them. The bible calls this ‘a complete change of your mind.’ Are you still living with an old operating system?

2. Reprogramming your mind with good expectation. This will not happen automatically. You must consciously choose to live with an attitude that expects good things to happen to you because God is on your side. The way you begin your day makes all the difference. You can wake up and say “This is the day that the Lord has made and I will rejoice and be glad in it. (Psalms 118:24). I thank God for giving me the victory and he will direct my steps. His goodness and mercy will follow me.” Start the day with faith and expectancy and go out and live your life by expecting good things to come your way and expect circumstances will change in your favor. Expect to meet good people and expect good opportunity to come to you. Negative thoughts are programmed thoughts. Faith is to believe and expect that God has the best for you.
