How Can We Change To Make It Better?

by Rev. James Wong

Bishop Thomas Tsen and Bro. Fung Yin Khun flew in from KK whereas Bro. Lo Lie Meng and I flew in from Sandakan and we met in the KLIA on last Sunday evening. We were going to Seremban for the Global Leadership Summit (19-20 Oct 2009), held at the Agape Gospel Assembly church. The venue was most appropriate because of its modern facility. Just the LCD projector cost RM50,000! There were more than 500 participants.

What is Global Leadership Submit? Here is a brief write up:
“The Willow Creek Association's vision for The Global Leadership Summit is that every Christ-follower with leadership gifts, skills, or aspirations would gather once each year, dedicating themselves to raising their level of leadership on behalf of the local church and other organizations.

We hold a deep belief that if you change a church leader, you can change a church, and if enough churches start changing, you can change an entire region, country, and eventually the world.

In 1995, this belief gave birth to The Leadership Summit. Now, 14 years later, the Summit in North America has grown from 1 site to over 140 sites linked together via satellite and over 65,000 leaders in 2008. And in 2008, The Global Leadership Summit brought together via video-cast over 46,000 people in 114 cities and 50 countries.”
“The Global Leadership Summit is a trusted, high-caliber event that’s designed to transform Christian leaders on behalf of the local church with an annual injection of vision, skill development and inspiration.
Together with your entire leadership team:
  • Explore cutting-edge leadership principles from some of the world's foremost leadership experts and communicators
  • Engage in live, heartfelt worship that will refresh your soul and draw you closer to our great God
  • Tackle issues unique to leaders, including casting vision, motivating others, self-management, team building, managing volunteers, problem solving, decision making, and much more.”

The two days of seminar was most revealing and inspiring. We had uninterrupted time to listen to world class leaders who have brought significant changes to the world. After each session we had the opportunity to discuss. Leaders must learn to change and adapt to change to achieve maximum impact and results through the local church. “How can we change to make it better” is a question that a good leader must embrace. Let us aspire to be effective leaders for God.

Lessons On Relationship (Part 4)

Restoring Relationships: Sympathize
by Rick Warren

"A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense" (Proverbs 19:11 NIV).

The third biblical step toward restoring a relationship is to sympathize with the other person's feelings.

Use your ears more than your mouth. Before attempting to solve any disagreement you must first listen to the other's feelings. Paul advised, "Look out for one another's interests, not just for your own" (Philip. 2:4 TEV). The phrase "look out for" is the Greek word skopos, from which we form our words telescope and microscope. It means pay close attention! Focus on their feelings, not the facts. Begin with sympathy, not solutions.

Don't try to talk people out of how they feel at first. Just listen and let them unload emotionally without being defensive. Nod that you understand even when you don't agree. Feelings are not always true or logical. In fact, resentment makes us act and think in foolish ways. David admitted, "When my thoughts were bitter and my feelings were hurt, I was as stupid as an animal" (Psalm 73:21-22 TEV). We all act beastly when hurt.

In contrast, the Bible says, "A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense" (Prov. 19:11 NIV). Patience comes from wisdom, and wisdom comes from hearing the perspective of others.

Listening says, "I value your opinion, I care about our relationship, and you matter to me." The cliché is true: People don't care what we know until they know we care.

To restore fellowship "we must bear the 'burden' of being considerate of the doubts and fears of others . . . Let's please the other fellow, not ourselves, and do what is for his good" (Rom. 15:2 LB). It is a sacrifice to patiently absorb the anger of others, especially if it's unfounded.

But remember, this is what Jesus did for you. He endured unfounded, malicious anger in order to save you. "Christ did not indulge his own feelings . . . as scripture says: The insults of those who insult you fall on me" (Rom. 15:3, NJB

Boys' Brigade Officers' Equipping Conference (OEC)

16-18 October 2009

I attended the above conference which was held in the Methodist Centennial Park, Sibu Sarawak. The purpose of the conference is “shaping leaders, impacting lives”. A total of 46 officers from different states of Malaysia participated in this conference.

Mr. Steven Low was the invited speaker for the conference. He was in the life and General Insurance industry more than 25 years, then he gave his time to serve the Lord. He ministers widely in evangelistic preaching, Bible teaching and discipleship-making through church camps and retreats, short term Bible schools, Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship chapters, Christian Fellowships of school, colleges and universities. He is also the Training Manager of WorldTech (Walk-Thru the Bible) Ministry.

The courses conducted in the conference are very useful not only for the officers of the Boys’ Brigade, but for Sunday school teachers and all who serve in the church ministries. We were reminded that as a disciple of God we must always be alert of our daily and spiritual life, which is, always keep the fire burning (Lev 6:8-13).

What impacted me was on the subject of a leader’s influence and the importance of leaders having the communication skill who can stand out and talk to influence the followers. Christian leaders must be hungry for God’s words, the Bible, which is the greatest leadership guide book. The temptations of leadership were also covered in the conference. I felt very much blessed by God in this conference. It has helped me to learn to be a leader.

Understanding Ordination

by Rev. James Wong

The ordination service of Pastors and Reverends was held in BCCM KK on the 17 Oct 2009 (Saturday) at 2:00pm.

In our church we have three levels of pastoral posts; Preachers, Pastors and Reverend Pastors at the highest level. The status conferred on the candidate of ordination is a recognition of a person’s fitness for the pastoral office and a public recognition of a person’s commitment to serve the church. It is not a promotion. Especially the ordination to Reverend, it is the candidate’s public declaration of a life long commitment to serve the Lord and His people. He/she makes a public promise to be faithful in carrying out the work entrusted to him. Thus, ordination is a defining moment in the life of those who serve full-time in the ministry. Here are the various qualifications for the different pastoral posts.

The qualification of Preachers: (1) Graduated from recognized Theological Seminary or Bible College and posses at least Certificate in Theology. (2) Must be a dedicated Christian with a calling to serve.

Qualification of Pastors: (1) Graduate from recognized Theological Seminary or Bible College and possess at least Bachelor of Theology or equivalent qualifications. (2) Served as preacher for at least one year. (3) Assessed and recommended by the Pastors Ordination Committee (4) Must be a dedicated Christian with a calling to serve.

Qualification of Reverend Pastors: (1) Graduate from recognized Theological Seminary or Bible College and possess at least Bachelor of Theology or equivalent qualifications. (2) Served as pastor for at least three years. (3) Recommended by the Pastors Ordination Committee and pass the qualifying examination. (4) Must be a dedicated Christian with a calling to serve.

In our church we do not ordain a person to become Preacher. We commission them to be Preacher. However, Pastors and Reverends are ordained. Ordination is for life unless due to unforeseen circumstances, the ordination is revoked.

The chief responsibility of the ordained ministry is to build up the body of Christ by proclaiming and teaching the Word of God, by celebrating the sacraments, and by providing guidance for the life of the community in its worship, its mission, and its caring ministry. This ministerial task is founded on Ephesians 4:11-13, “It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ (NIV).”

The main task of pastors is to acquire the skill to train God’s people for ministry because serving Christ is the privilege and responsibility of all believers. It is the mobilization of the whole church for ministry is one of the most daunting tasks of pastors. Support your pastors in prayer always and serve the Lord wherever you can. Serving Christ is not reserved for ordained pastors.

Introduction

Nehemiah’s Concern

Nehemiah was concerned about the city of Jerusalem, about the temple of Jerusalem. Why?

The city of Jerusalem / the temple of Jerusalem signify:
Wall of Jerusalem / Temple of Jerusalem signify:
The identity of the Jews

Fall of Jerusalem:
Loss of identity, influence, worship centre.
Became a people of shame.

Resistance from Within and Without

Parallel Stories / Testimonies Between the Wall of Jerusalem and STS

What is the Identity / Center Point of Christianity in Malaysia?
Malaysia is 52 years old now, do we have a common identity which can hold us or unite us together?

Nehemiah presented the vision to people who would do the work

The entire construction project was completed in 52 days.

Unity is power. People get united through the Nehemiah project. The project was completed in 52 days.

Christians in Malaysia do need a strong centre / focal point of our religious, spiritual, cultural, educational, economic and political activities.

Theological Education in Malaysia
There are about 500,000 Protestants in Sabah. Presently, a shortage of 1,600 pastors in the indigenous church, based on a recommended proportion of about 1:200. A similar need applies to the indigenous churches in Sarawak.

The total construction cost for the new Education Centre is 6.5 million ringgit. STS is still RM3 million short in meeting the total cost of the project.

Conclusion

Lessons On Relationship (Part 3)

Restoring Relationships: Take the initiative
by Rick Warren

"If you enter your place of worship and are about to make an offering, but you suddenly remember a grudge a friend has against you, abandon your offering, leave immediately, go to this friend and make things right. Then and only then, come back and work things out with God" (Matthew 5:23-24 Msg).
———————————————————————————————

The second biblical step toward restoring a relationship is to take the initiative.

It doesn't matter whether you are the offender or the offended, God expects you to make the first move. Don't wait for the other party. Go to them first.

Restoring broken fellowship is so important, Jesus commanded that it even take priority over group worship. He said, "If you enter your place of worship and are about to make an offering, but you suddenly remember a grudge a friend has against you, abandon your offering, leave immediately, go to this friend and make things right. Then and only then, come back and work things out with God" (Matt. 5:23-24 Msg).

When fellowship is strained or broken, plan a peace conference immediately. Don't procrastinate, make excuses, or promise, "I'll get around to it someday." Schedule a face-to-face meeting as soon as possible. Delay only deepens resentment and makes matters worse.

In conflict, time heals nothing; it causes hurts to fester.

Acting quickly also reduces the spiritual damage to you. The Bible says sin, including unresolved conflict, blocks our fellowship with God and keeps our prayers from being answered, besides making us miserable. Job's friends reminded him, "To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do," (Job 5:2, TEV) and "You're only hurting yourself with your anger" (Job 18:4, TEV).

The success of a peace conference often depends on choosing the right time and place to meet. Don't meet when both of you are tired, rushed or could be interrupted. The best time is when you both are at your best.

Marriage

Congratulation

Testimony Sharing Night

9th October 2009
Report by Lin Yet Far

“Love Can Make Up For the Breach of Life” a testimony shared by Pr. Chung Su Ming who is from Taiwan. She is married with a daughter Hui Xin who is born with congenital brain damage and is physically handicapped in the eyes and the nose which are not properly formed. Her vertebral column curved to one side, legs not of the same length, defect in the left ear and defects in the teeth and jaw bones. It was a bolt from the blue to the family. She and her husband are healthy and there is no hereditary disease record in the family. She was totally devastated and lost hope. She thought of suicide with her daughter, but heard God speaking to her of His love. God never fails in His promises and love to this family. Hui Xin was an angel sent by God to bring countless encouragement to many people.

Their testimony was a challenge of faith. The right attitude that human beings should adopt toward God is that of self-surrender. The cross does not solve the problem of human suffering, but it gives us the right perspective from which to view it. It was a night that many of us would not easily forget.

“For I know the plan I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

The Truth About Resurrection

by Rev. James Wong

The most bizarre news a week ago in Sabah was the discovery of the body of a cult leader in Penampang, identified as Chin Chi Vui @ Ivan. He was the leader of a church known as Church With No Walls (CWNW). His body was kept in a room for 13 months because members waited for his resurrection. (Please refer to pages 7-8 for more details). Did the bible ever talk about preserving the body of the dead and pray for their resurrection? No!

The followings are some important truths about resurrection.

Resurrection is the raising of a dead person to life. It is a divine act of God in causing a dead person to become alive again. Resurrection is the abolition of death, the rescue of the body from corruption and the soul from Hades.

1. The resurrection of Jesus Christ. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Christian church. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ there will be no church because the Christian faith was founded on the belief that Jesus Christ the son of God was raised from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion (see 1 Cor 15:6-19). Easter day is a celebration and proclamation of Christ’s resurrection. Romans 1:4-5 says: “Jesus was shown to be the Son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. He is Jesus Christ our Lord (NLT).” Jesus is now alive forever and ever and he holds the keys of death and Hades (Rev 1:18).

2. The resurrection at the last day. There will be a resurrection at the end of the age. Luke 20:34-38 says: “Those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead... cannot die any more, for they are like the angels, and are sons of God being sons of the resurrection.” It will be a resurrection of reward for eternal life or condemnation. John 5:28-29 has this to say: “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out — those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.” The dead will be resurrected at the last day not now because 1 Thess 4:16-17 says: “the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves (NLT).

3. The resurrection unto eternal life. This is the hope and assurance of our faith in Christ. Those of us who believe in Christ will resurrect from the death unto eternal life. In John 11:25, at the raising of Lazarus, Jesus said : “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me shall live even if he dies.” Only those who believe in Christ will live on to eternal life as Jesus promised that anyone who believes in him will never die (John 11:26). The resurrected body is a different body. “The dead shall be raised incorruptible... this mortal must put on immortality (1Co 15:50-55).” Our hope of resurrection is based on the fact of Christ’s own resurrection from the dead. It is the grace of God for us.

6 Lessons on Relationship (Part 2)

Growing In The Word Series

Word family: Baptism, baptize
————————————————————————-
Synonyms: immersion, dipping,
—————————————————————————————————————---
Related ideas: new birth (regeneration), salvation, forgiveness of sins, the gift of the Holy Spirit, death-burial-resurrection of Christ, sanctification/purification
—————————————————————————————————————---
Definition: Baptism is the immersion of a person's whole body in water, in the name (by the authority) of Jesus Christ, for the forgiveness of sins by grace, and to receive the gift or indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
———————————————————————————————-——————--
Greek References: βαπτισμα baptisma (baptism), βαπτιζω baptizo (baptize), 907,908 (Strong) cf 909,910. [from 911 βαπτω bapto, to dip]
———————————————————————————————-——————--
Scripture:
Between repentance and forgiveness of sins

Mrk 1:4 “John appeared... preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins”
Acts 2:38 “Repent and be baptized every one of you... for the forgiveness of sins”

Faith is a prerequisite
Mrk 16:16 “He who believes and is baptized shall be saved...”
Acts 8:36-37 “Look! water! What prevents me from being baptized? ...'If you believe with all your heart you may'”
Acts 18:8 “And many of the Corinthians hearing, believed and were baptized”

A burial and resurrection symbol
Rom 6:3-4 “...buried with him through baptism into death... in the likeness of his death... [and] resurrection”
1Co 10:2 “All passed through the sea, and all were baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea”

Necessary for faith in Christ
Gal 3:26-29 “You are all sons [and heirs] of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ...”
1Pe 3:20-21 “...in the days of Noah... eight persons were brought safely through the water, and the antitype of that is baptism which now saves you...”

Comment: Baptism is reserved for those who believe in the Lord Jesus as his/her personal savior. It is an outward sign of a person’s faith in Christ. Baptism presupposes the existence of faith. Baptism without faith does not bring about salvation “for it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Eph 2:8).

Baptism is defined in most secular dictionaries according to modern usage, not strictly according to Bible usage. We need to let the Bible alone teach us about what it calls baptism. Be aware that the word "baptism" is a transliteration (rather than a translation) of the Greek word. English versions of the Bible have generally resiled from actually translating the Greek (for example with "dipping" or "immersion").

Resurrection Cult Chief Fails To Resurrect

Joe Fernandez Oct 3, 09 10:52am
The Sabah Council of Churches (SCC) has warned against embracing misleading teachings that are attributed to Christianity as this could have serious and fatal consequences.

It is learnt that the SCC will also debate the issue at its next meeting in the third week of this month in Kota Kinabalu.

The caution follows the discovery of the body of a "Church With No Walls" (CWNW) cult leader earlier this week in Penampang, in the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu.

The body of the 37-year old cult leader had lain unburied for 13 months as members of the cult waited for his resurrection. Police have since identified the deceased as Ching Chi Vui @ Ivan.

"The emergence of the so-called CWNW should serve as a warning to Christian churches that there are all kinds of teachings out there that are being attributed to Christianity," said SCC vice-president Bishop Thomas Tsen Lip Tet.

"This is something very disturbing to many people who attend the regular churches as usual but keep hearing of other things out there."

Bishop Thomas clarified that although the Church With No Walls concept preached by the CWNW deviants was not wrong, the teachings were not in line with that of Christian churches and border on the bizarre.

The cult's members, he said, believed that their leader would be resurrected if they prayed to God.

No resurrection on demand

The Chinese General Council of the Basel Christian Church Of Malaysia in Kota Kinabalu concurs with Bishop Thomas.

Dean Reverend Alec Chung Hee Ming stressed that Christian teachings don't advocate praying over a corpse to wait for resurrection.

The Bible, it is also stressed, does not teach that Jesus Christ will come someday to resurrect us all and all that Christians need to do is to be on alert.

"The Bible also does not teach us that we should not do anything and just sit around and wait for the arrival of Christ," said Reverend Alec.

"The Bible does not ask its disciples to achieve extraordinary feats either like becoming prophets."

Both Bishop Thomas and Reverend Alec lamented that misleading teachings were taking place, if not spreading, on their watch.

Bishop Thomas, delving into the faith aspects of Christianity, stressed that God performs many miracles in his own way in the lives of ordinary people.

This is evident from the personal testimonies of Christians, and even others, who go public with their experiences. However, resurrection on demand has not been among these miracles so far, he added.

The concept of a Church With No Walls, continued Bishop Thomas, refers to the unification of all churches regardless of the differences at the edges of the Christian faith.

"The unification is made possible", according to Bishop Thomas, "by a unanimous accord among the Christians that it is possible to gather together in one place and worship in Jesus Christ".

No foul play in death

Police have since released three women - two 26-year-old twin sisters and a 46-year-old divorcee -- believed to be followers of the cult leader, after questioning Penampang Police Chief, DSP Madang Usat, disclosed that initial investigations have ruled out foul play.

Instead, police have classified the case as one of "sudden death" and are awaiting post-mortem results to ascertain the cause of death.

The body is expected to be released to his family in Tawau. The followers promised police that they would send two of the deceased's brothers to collect the body.

"The body had already dried up and turned black. There was not much smell," said Usat who released details of the discovery.

Police had to break the lock to gain entry into the house after the occupants refused to open the door, according to Usat.

The three women were found huddled in one room of the house.

"We found the deceased on a mattress in the living room, clad only in a pair of shorts, and wrapped 13 times with blankets and plastic," said Usat.

"The walls of the house where the deceased was found were plastered with religious words written in Chinese."

The 46-year-old woman, named Chu, told police that the deceased had warned them not to bury his body if he died because he will be resurrected again.

She also warned police not to go near the body because "they would die if they did so".
"It was established through the deceased's youngest sibling in Tawau that he had not been home for two years," said Usat.

Talking to a shrine

Neighbours told police that they previously saw Chu and the deceased having fights outside the house. They did not see the deceased for a year.

Sometimes, they saw the woman talking angrily to a mini shrine near the house in the wee hours of the morning between 3 am and 4 am.

Difficult Youngsters?

by Rev. James Wong

Today is Sunday School Sunday. Our Sunday school serves children from age 3 to teenagers in Form 5.

Youngsters always puzzle me. As the world is changing fast I found that we have to change methods without changing or compromising the message of the gospel. New problems require new solution and new situations require new attitude shift. For example, Sunday school began as an evangelistic way to teach people how to read. The original idea was to give illiterate people a Bible and a formal education on one day of the week when they didn't work. That ‘off day’ was Sunday—hence the name Sunday school. Starting Sunday school was a brilliant idea to win people for Christ and at the same time meeting a social need. The situation is very different today. How can we effectively reach our youngsters today?

1. Reach them on their terms and not on our terms. Jesus said "Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men" (Matt 4:19 NIV). I once went fishing using KFC chicken meat because I had it for lunch but I caught no fish. The fish were biting the bait of the guy next to me because he fished with worms. Fishes like worms. We need to seek out what is important in their lives. Fisherman are knowledgeable about the habits of the different fishes.

2. Their tastes for things that are interesting. This includes interesting environment, interesting programs and interesting activities. Why such fuzz? Because they are exposed and influenced by the multi-media world. Graphics, colors, patterns, environments and audio visuals matter to them. We have a new generation that are on the World Wide Web. Web pages that are boring will not gain a second visit! Is our Sunday school an interesting place to learn about God and studying his Words? Alliance Bank is the first bank in Malaysia that comes out with a banking environment that is attractive to young people. They know the new mindset of the generation. Winning the business of the young people is to be ahead in the future.

3. Their need for friendship and love. Most children use mobile phone today and they get connected with their friends through MSN, Skype, Facebook, Tweeters and etc. The use of such technologies tell us the importance of relationships and friendship. The development of a caring and friendly relationship between teachers and students is crucial. Unless we win their friendship inside and outside the classrooms we will not be able to influence them for long. Before they can see Jesus as their friend they have to experience that we are their friends.

4. Their love for music. We have a music loving generation. I have come across a kid who specifically asked for a mobile phone for her birthday; not just any phone but a phone that can store many songs. An Ipod can hold 20,000 songs and most users are youngsters, a shopkeeper told me. What in the world they need so many songs? It is for music sharing! Never underestimate the importance of music in the Sunday school. Are we using some new and exciting tunes to bring across the message of God’s love, or are we still humming on the same old tunes for many decades?

You see, it is no easy task to serve in the Sunday school. The challenges are many. One new kid came to the Sunday school one day. And as he entered the classroom he said: “What a lousy place.” I was so displeased but then I realized the world has changed and I was unable to catch up. Let us give our unreserved support to this ministry and to all our dedicated teachers.

God's Precious Little Ones

Matthew 19:13-15

1. Welcome the children
13 Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. 14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. ~Matt 19:13-15 (NIV)

36 He took a little child and had him stand among them. Taking him in his arms, he said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me." ~Mark 9:36-37 (NIV)

2. Learn from the children
3 And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. ~Matt 18:3-4 (NIV)

3. Protect the children
5 "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. 6 But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. ~Matt 18:5-6 (NIV)

6 Lessons on Relationship (Part 1)

Relationships are Worth Restoring
by Rick Warren

"If you've gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you . . . agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends" (Philippians 2:1-2 Msg).

Relationships are always worth restoring.

Life is all about learning how to love, and God wants us to value relationships and make every effort to maintain them instead of discarding them whenever there is a rift, a hurt or a conflict.

In fact, the Bible tells us that God has given us the ministry of restoring relationships. For this reason a significant amount of the New Testament is devoted to teaching us how to get along with one another.

The Apostle Paul taught that our ability to get along with others is a mark of spiritual maturity. Since Christ wants his family to be known for our love for each other, broken fellowship is a disgraceful testimony to unbelievers. This is why Paul was so embarrassed that the members of the church in Corinth were splitting into warring factions and even taking each other to court.

He wrote, "Shame on you! Surely there is at least one wise person in your fellowship who can settle a dispute between fellow Christians" (1 Cor. 6:5 TEV). He was shocked that no one in the church was mature enough to resolve the conflict peaceably. In the same letter, he said, "I'll put it as urgently as I can: You must get along with each other" (1 Cor. 1:10 Msg).

If you want God's blessing on your life and you want to be known as a child of God, you must learn to be a peacemaker. Jesus said, "God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God" (Matt. 5:9 NLT).

Notice Jesus didn't say, "Blessed are the peace lovers," because everyone loves peace. Neither did he say, "Blessed are the peaceable," who are never disturbed by anything. Jesus said, "Blessed are those who work for peace"--those who actively seek to resolve conflict.

Peacemakers are rare because peacemaking is hard work, but because you were formed to be a part of God's family, peacemaking is one of the most important skills you can develop.

Unfortunately, most of us were never taught how to resolve conflict, so over the next few days, we’ll consider the steps necessary to resolve conflict.

Growing In The Word Series

Christian Mission Schools And Kindergardens Established by BCCM

Compiled by sister Yap Pak Shun

Christian Mission Schools were set up in Sabah by various Christian Missionaries/Organizations during the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s. In 1882, the first batch of Chinese (Hakka) Basel Christians arrived at Kudat, as laborers recruited by the British North Borneo Chartered Company. The development of the schools of the Basel Church is the story of pioneers coming to Sabah from China, striving to give their children a suitable education. In spite of poverty and two World Wars, the Christians of the Basel Church in Sabah sought ways and means to build and maintain their schools. Even though the schools were established by the church, they are open to children of all races and religions.

The development of the schools were greatly helped by the Basel Mission in Basel Switzerland and in China, and the Lutheran Church of America providing missionaries, pastors, principals and teachers, especially after the Second World War, until the early 1970’s.

To date, the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia has established a total of 29 Schools and Kindergartens as follows:
5 Chinese Primary Schools – SJK(C) Lok Yuk, Likas; SJK(C) Lok Yuk, Menggatal; SJK(C) Anglo Chinese, Papar; SJK(C) Pinangsoo, Kudat; SJK(C) Lok Yuk Batu 1, Kudat.

7 Malay Medium Primary Schools (Formerly English) – SK Sung Siew, Sandakan; SK Lok Yuk Inanam; SK Lok Yuk Likas; SK Lok Yuk Telipok; SK Lok Yuk Batu 1, Kudat; SK Lok Yuk Tamalang, Kudat; SK Lok Yuk, Sikuati, Kudat.

3 Secondary Schools – SM Sung Siew (CF), Sandakan; SM Lok Yuk (CF) Likas; SM Lok Yuk, Kudat.

14 Kindergartens – Tadika Yuk Yu, Inanam; Tadika Lok Yuk, Keningau; Tadika Lok Yuk, Kota Belud; Taman Tadika Lok Yuk, Kudat; Yuk Yu Kindergarten, Likas, Kota Kinabalu; Tadika Lok Yuk, Menggatal; Sekolah Tadika Lok Yuk, Papar; Tadika Yuk Yu, Penampang; Tadika Lok Yuk, Petagas; Yuk Yu Kindergarten, Ranau; Sung Siew Kindergarten/Tadika Sung Siew Sandakan; Tadika Lok Yuk, Tamparuli; Wonder Kids Taska Lok Yuk, Tawau; Tadika Lok Yuk, Tenom.

In addition, BCCM Sandakan has established a Day-Care Centre, named Agape Centre, for special children (Handicapped children), and BCCM Tawau has established a Centre for the deaf and down syndrome children.

The first school of BCCM was established in Kudat in 1903. In fact, several schools are more than 100 years old. It is interesting to note from a Census Report that there were 8 Mission Schools in Sabah (formerly known as British North Borneo) in 1910, but the number increased to 45 in 1934. Of these, 18 were operated by the Basel Christian Church, 20 by the Roman Catholic Mission and 7 by the Anglican Church.

Recently, the 7 Malay Medium Primary Schools and 3 Secondary Schools together with 19 other Christian Mission Schools were presented with cheques of various amounts (based on the schools’ application) under the Economy Stimulus Package II, for upgrading of schools, maintenance and repair. Our Chinese Medium Primary Schools were given similar grants earlier in the year, under the Economy Stimulus Package I. We are indeed thankful to the Federal Government for these allocations of funds which are very much needed for the maintenance of our schools. Praise the Lord!

NOTE: In the whole of Malaysia, there are around 425 Christian Mission Schools. On 26-27 June 2009, 41 representatives from Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia attended the Conference of Christian Mission Schools in Malaysia at Olympic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, organized by the Malayan Christian Schools Council and the Mission School Authorities of Sabah and Sarawak under the auspices of the Christian Federation of Malaysia (CFM). The representatives were encouraged, affirmed and united by their common concern in improving their current high standards of education and providing the best opportunities for the children attending these schools.

The ‘Malayan Christian Schools Council’ intends to form the ‘Federation of Christian Schools, Malaysia’ to cater for all the Christian Mission Schools in Malaysia, to speak and act together, in all matters related to Education, School Staff and such other specific matters as may be raised.
